Greenhouse and Garden Wrap Up
At the end of March the greenhouse was getting pretty hot during the day in Florida. We cut the side of the visqueen and rolled it on a piece of PVC to make a large window. To help with the heat, we put screen in the opening to keep critters out. We could tell that soon, the planting in the greenhouse would need to wrap up.
Here’s how we built our greenhouse.
The plants grew amazing in the greenhouse… lush green plants everywhere.
Problems in the Greenhouse
It wasn’t without its problems though. We had hoped the greenhouse would help with pests, such as insects, however the aphids still thrived in the greenhouse. I have to say, they bite too!
We tried several treatments, I made a homemade concoction that literally burned my skin and lungs spraying it on. I sprayed it on heavy and then got scared I’d burn the plants with the cayenne. Still the aphids persisted. We discussed several times ordering lady bugs to release in the greenhouse, but didn’t actually do it.
The idea of organic gardening is alluring, the actual practice of it, is much more difficult, something we have yet to master.
Time for the Greenhouse to Wrap Up
Even though we got a late start on the garden and it didn’t produce as much as we would have liked, it was still well worth the effort. Philip had debated doing a garden this year and we finally decided to do so, I was so glad we did when Covid hit, it solidified the reason we work toward securing our own food source.
