Wing Trimming to Corral Escape Artists
We had given my daughter, Kaitlyn Soroka a baby turkey to go with her new laying hens chicks. Snowflake, their Royal Palm hen was really getting the hang of her wings. She was getting braver by the day to explore her territory, including the roof of their house. Time to do a little wing trimming to prevent her escape.
Wing Trimming Quick Tip
Philip created a quick training video to show Kaitlyn how to trim her bird’s wing.
While most people refer to it as “trimming a bird’s wing”, the wing itself is not cut, only the feathers. We only trim one wing to upset the bird’s flight balance which prevents them from trying to fly. Important note, cutting both wing feathers would not prevent flying, the birds can still achieve balance in flight.
Turkeys can also jump really high, so Snowflake may not be discouraged regardless of getting her wing trimmed.
